suggestions?
I know the D40x costs more than a D40, and a XTi costs more than a XT, but those are definitely worth the extra money. It's not because they're more megapixles, but because they have better sensors, thus producing better pictures.
As far as the XTi vs D40x goes, they're pretty much on par. I know the XTi takes a wider variety of lenses than the D40x does, because the D40x has a different mount than other Nikon SLR's. However, if you only plan on getting like 2 lenses, than they're pretty much the same, and the choice is up to you.
But what do I know? I only sell cameras for a living.

I have the XT and I love it. A lot of people on here are Hardcore Nikon fans so you're not going to find much support for Canon but I'm so glad I made my choice. Of course, I'd get the XTi now if I could, but the XT works fine. Canon's lens are great, and not overpriced like the Nikkor lenses are. When I bought my camera I compared the D70 and the Rebel XT and sided with Canon.
I guess the XT is ok, as long as you don't drop it off 93.... {SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif
But I still say even before that incident, it was the worst camera I've ever owned.

I thought you had the Digital Rebel. Not XT.

The rebel wasn't that great of a camera. It was bulky, only had 6MP. It was canon's first cheap dSLR. They've definitely improved since then.

I had the XT.
My bad.
I'm probably going to get the D40 2 Lens Kit. It just seems more sensible. Especially since I already have an SD Card.
Well if you can find a D50 you'd like it SO much better.
I can't stand the D40/D40x/XTi junk.

because of the bright ass screen?
And the way the screen makes you use it. It feels like a toy. And its to small to be comfortable to me.

yeah. well, I'm used to a PnS, so it wouldn't be too different to me.

That reminds me, the XTi has dust reduction technology, the D40x does not.

go w/ the d50 and buy another lens for the money you saved. I love the d50. i have tried the d40/d40x when i was buying one and it is hard as hell to hold. i do have a large hand though. the d50 is easier to carry around. plus the top screen helps alot more and the d40/d40x lacks that top screen.

Yeah, but honestly how important is it that the sensor does a little shake every time you turn it on? As long as you make your lens changes quick, in a relatively dustless environment (don't change lens after rolling in that pile of asbestos) you're really not going to get dust in there. That's just my thought.
I also agree about the large LCDs. The XTi removed the smaller screen that only displayed info like the ISO, aperture, etc. and put that info on the main LCD. I like it better with 2 screens, that way your not powering this big obnoxious screen killing your battery life. Also, the smaller LCD on the XT has a backlight you can turn on and off, while since the XTi uses the main LCD, it's got the always on EL backlight, which sucks for shoot in the dark, and being as discreet as possible.

I have the XTi and you can turn the screen off.I have had the battery last forever and I always use the screen. The nifty thing is,when you put your eye up to the viewfinder the screen shuts off.
I don't have any experience with Nikon so I can't diss them.
Ive used the XT before and I really don't like it.The price on them is so low now.Spend the extra and get the XTi if you go with Canon
Sure you can turn it off, but then you can't see even the simplest of info, cause they don't have the top screen.
And I'm not picking on Canon cause I hate the D40 and D40x just as much for the same reason.

The f-stop,shutter speed and metering system can all be changed while looking in the viewfinder.Takes away from the need of the top screen.I don't really like the top screen idea anyway. The ISO isn't displayed in there but you can just look at the back screen.
I know you not picking on Canon Ray.I just know that you love you camera as I love mine.

'Tis the truth.
If you really want to know what you're doing, go to your nearest Best Buy and hold the 2. Play around with the settings and snap off some pictures. It could be the best camera on earth, but if it doesn't feel good in your hands or is too much/little for you, it's shit.
I'd rather not have to look through the view finder for everything, hurts my eyes as it is.
I just don't understand the logic behind that giant screen. Ok maybe its nice sometimes, but IF I stil had the top screen for when I didn't want it. And if they say its to make it smaller, well my D80 feels a LOT more comfortable in my hands then a D40 or an XTi does. If anything, I'd like it to be a bit bigger.
The only reason I can see to buy one is its cheaper, but then why not get a D50?
And if I was actually going to go with Canon, I'd take an XT over an XTi anyday.

I'd take a 30D over the Rebel's anyday! The Nikon D80's a nice camera, I've never used the D50. I didn't like the D40 when I played with my friend's. Has the top screen (which she cracked) and is a lot bigger than the XT, but felt like a lot of hollow plastic.
